Osher Lifelong Learners tackle Vital Signs
What do a former teacher, a theoretical physicist, an oral surgeon, and an engineer have in common? They are all members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Maine's OLLI community is based at the University of Southern Maine, and is one of 122 institutes in the nation that provide opportunities for motivated adult learners. After spending two days with the Vital Signs Team, they are now official participants in the Vital Signs Community!

On March 9 & 11, the Vital Signs Team held a citizen scientist training for OLLI members. Following the 2-day hands-on introduction, 6 energized, passionate citizen scientists joined the Vital Signs community. Each plans to play a different role from Investigator to Field Trip Supporter to Armchair Coach to species card contributor. The group is also working on a 2-hour experiential introduction to Vital Signs to engage more OLLI members (there are 1,300+ in the state).
During the training, we worked together to set guidelines for online commenting and coaching. The results of these lively discussions were incorporated into a new curriculum resource. Check out the Online Comments & Community Review activity in our Open Resources Exchange.
