Rubrics and Assessment Tools, Units of study, Learning activities, Field work resources, Analysis resources Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry Invasive Species & Biodiversity Data Investigation Explore the the research question, "Does an invasive species impact biodiversity?" with the Invasive Species & Biodiversity Vital Signs Data Investigation Curriculum Extension. This extension assumes that you have experience implementing Vital Signs in your classroom and have developed a unit plan around an investigation or use one like the Change Over Time Unit: http://vitalsignsme.org/10-day-curriculum-population-change-over-time. Rubrics and Assessment Tools Constancy & change One point rubrics for NGSS LS4 Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity Included are one point rubrics aligned to the NGSS middle level standards under the category LS4. Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity. There are three rubrics included, each with several performance expectations: - LS4.A Evidence of Common Ancestry and Diversity (LS4.1, 4.2, 4.3) - LS4.B Natural Selection (LS4.4 & 4.5) - LS4.C Adaptation (LS4.6) Although I haven't used these directly in conjunction with a vital signs mission, they can be used as support or transition to another unit. Rubrics and Assessment Tools Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems One point rubric for NGSS LS2.B Cycles of Matter and Energy Transfer in Ecosystems This is a one point rubric aligned to the NGSS middle level standards for the DCI Cycles of Matter and Energy Transfer in Ecosystems. The performance expectations included are LS2.3. I have not yet used this standard directly with a vital signs mission, however, believe it can be used to aid student understanding of ecosystem relationships and energy transfer. The one point rubrics are designed to be entirely student friendly and include three columns. Middle school (grades 6-8) kmwbailey 0 2015-08-20
Rubrics and Assessment Tools Constancy & change, Ecosystems One point rubric for NGSS LS2.A Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems This is a one point rubric aligned to the NGSS middle level standards for the DCI Interdependent Relationshios in Ecosystems. The performance expectations included are LS2.1 & LS2.2, both of which I use as a prelude to vital signs investigations. The can also be used during a study to aid student understanding of ecosystem relationships. The one point rubrics are designed to be entirely student friendly and include three columns. Rubrics and Assessment Tools Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems One Point Rubrics NGSS MS-LS2.C Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning and Resilience This is a one point rubric aligned to the NGSS middle level standards for the DCI Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning, and Resilience. The performance expectations included are LS2.4 & LS2.5, both of which I use with vital signs investigations. The one point rubrics are designed to be entirely student friendly and include three columns. Middle school (grades 6-8) kmwbailey 0 2015-08-20
Rubrics and Assessment Tools Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry, Tutorial/ Template LS2.C Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning, and Resilience Below is a rubric I created aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards DCI's for biodiversity and invasive species. Feel free to change it to fit your curriculum needs! It covers the DCI LS2.c: Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning, and Resilience. Performance expectations MS-LS2-4 and MS-LS2-5. Rubrics and Assessment Tools, Learning activities Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Invasive species 2-Column Notes for Green Crab Video Have your students complete these 2-column notes while they watch the attached short video on green crabs. The video was created by O'Chang Studios. It's an engaging resource on the invasive green crab. Other resources you can use include - Vital Signs species ID card (http://vitalsignsme.org/sites/default/files/content/ci_carcinus_maenas_0...) Vital Signs Field Mission (http://vitalsignsme.org/mission-green-crab) and newspaper articles Follow the video up with a discussion about what we know about green crab, what we need to know more about, and how we can all help!

Rubrics and Assessment Tools, Learning activities, Instructional models Scientific inquiry BSCS Analogy Map Vital Signs Adaptation - Making meaning of models Working with models is one of the science practices in NGSS. We use lots of models in Vital Signs and in our classrooms, and sometimes we think students make the connections with the real world, but we aren't sure. I learned about this strategy at NSTA annual conference from BSCS and thought it would be a great addition to the New Bird in Town game, Oh, Deer! Invasive Species Style, or any other modeling activity or game. Here's one way it could work:
