Learning activities Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry Random sampling activity This activity is part of the full Invasive Species & Biodiversity Data Investigation curriculum found here - http://vitalsignsme.org/invasive-biodiversity-data-investigation Students will model the experience of random versus non-random sampling to determine the total number of M&M’s and the diversity of M&Ms in their M&M populations. First, students will choose where they want to sample, introducing bias into their sampling, and then they will try a random sampling technique. From nature journaling, using minnow traps to sample crayfish in their school pond, dissecting crayfish, and collecting, posting, and analyzing data, these citizen scientists really hit a home run!
