Learning activities Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Current events, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry Formal Science Writing and Revision Tools: Introductions These tools are designed to support students in constructing and then revising an introduction to a science research article. These two modified versions of the same tools include graphic organizers to structure writing and a revision technique to ensure that the essential information (and nothing extra) is included. These handouts work great in conjunction with a background research jigsaw activity. Middle school (grades 6-8) gmri 0 2017-08-24
Learning activities Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Current events, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry Background Research Jigsaw--Japanese Knotweed Use this structure to support collaborative research. In one to two class periods, students work together to gather and share background information to inform an investigation. Links provided are specific to Japanese knotweed; however, this activity can easily be adapted for any Vital Signs investigation. This is a great activity to prepare students for writing an introduction for a science research article. Included on this page are teacher instructions and accompanying student handouts. Learning activities Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Current events, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry Formal Science Writing: Introduction to Science Articles Use this short lesson to introduce students to the structure of a science article. Students skim student work samples to develop an understanding of the organization and essential information communicated in formal scientific writing. This is a great resource for preparing students to produce their own science research articles. Resources attached include lesson descriptions, student handouts, and a completed student work sample. Rubrics and Assessment Tools, Units of study, Learning activities, Instructional models Invasive species Invasive Species Interdisciplinary Unit Last year, staff at the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences worked together to design and implement an invasive species three week unit. This unit is linked to science, technology, art, math, social studies and humanities. We connected with volunteers at the Sebasticook Land Trust, Friends of Messalonskee and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to bring local issues into the classroom. I have uploaded our syllabus, schedule for the unit, a Vital Signs scavenger hunt and a knowledge rating scale/pre-assessment. I welcome questions or networking opportunities! Units of study Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species Vital Signs Population Change Over Time Data Investigation - Online PD Module Goals for this anytime anywhere module: Understand why working with data is important and a key part of doing science and an opportunity to bridge the math and science disciplines Recognize student understanding of and skill with statistical questions and variability as parts of being science literate Become familiar with Vital Signs Population Change Over Time Data Investigation curriculum Professional development vitalteach 0 2017-06-01
Units of study Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species Managing Invasive Species: Engaging the Next Generation in Resource Management - Online PD Module Goals for this anytime anywhere module: Become familiar with the Managing Invasive Species: Engaging the Next Generation in Resource Management curriculum Have hands-on experience with key components of this curriculum that will help you support students in: Identifying and asking statistical questions Developing data collection skills Making decisions based on data as evidence Collaborating with peers to form an invasive species management project Executing and monitoring the success of that project Professional development vitalteach 0 2017-05-30
Learning activities, Field work resources Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Scientific inquiry Intro Activity for Water Quality Bioassessment Mission Use this short, energizing lesson to prepare students for gathering and analyzing water quality data. Students will be introduced to Benthic Macro-Invertebrates (BMIs) and how they are used to monitor water quality. In three stations, students will develop skills in distinguishing BMIs with similar characteristics, identifying BMIs, and gathering data from the Vital Signs database on where BMIs have been found and not found. Students will use the data that they gathered to determine the water quality of a specific pond that has been monitored by other Vital Signs students. Middle school (grades 6-8) gmri 0 2017-05-26
Field work resources, Analysis resources Biodiversity, Constancy & change, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry, Tutorial/ Template Vee Diagram The Vee Diagram is a graphic organizer that outlines an authentic science investigation. Use this tool to help students track their process as they move from questioning to gathering data to drawing conclusions. This resource is pulled from the Invasive Species and Biodiversity Curriculum found here: http://vitalsignsme.org/invasive-species-biodiversity-data-investigation... Rubrics and Assessment Tools, Units of study, Learning activities, Field work resources, Analysis resources Biodiversity, Ecosystem health, Ecosystems, Invasive species, Scientific inquiry Invasive Species & Biodiversity Data Investigation - New and Improved! Explore the research question, "Does an invasive species impact biodiversity in my area?" with this full unit of study. Through this investigation, your students will develop understandings around interdependent relationships in ecosystems, skills in analyzing and interpreting data, and confidence in conducting authentic scientific research. They will explore the impact that invasive species have on biodiversity in local habitats while they collect and interpret real data and communicate their findings with a community of scientists.
