Field Notes
We took a walk behind our school the other day, looking for Gray Birch. It was a cold, snowy day. We are happy because we think we found the gray birch. We saw a lot of different trees and plants. We heard cars, rain and the sound of the snow under our feet. We smelled the cold, moist morning rain. We are surprised by how fast we found the tree. Our question is did we really find the Gray Birch and if so, how many more are there around here?

Supporting Evidence
Photo of my evidence.
We think we found the Gray Birch because we found the black triangular patches where the branches meet the trunk. This is opposed to the other Birch trees we found that didn't have that.

We also think we found the Gray Birch because the branches began almost at the ground. Most of the other trees in that area had higher branches.

Another reason we think we found the Gray Birch is they normally grow in upland clearings which is where we were looking.

You made some great observations! I love your sketch of the tree. It's so helpful to sketch your observations as well as take pictures.

Thank you for the nice comment, and we did find the Gray Birch but we are still not sure about how many Gray Birch trees are around here and we are probably not going to go out again for a little while. :) :)
