Field Notes
We were out searching for species in the early afternoon of a day in early October. It was breezy and cloudy and the lack of sun made it cool. We were on Mackworth island in Falmouth, Maine walking around the small island’s forest trails. I was traveling around the island with 5 other people searching for species. We walked slowly so we could observe all of the plants we passed by in search of 6 particular plants. As a group, we were looking for asian bittersweet, japanese barberry, morrow’s honeysuckle, giant knotweed, glossy buckthorn, multiflora rose. We found all of these plants at different places on the trail. I was specifically looking for morrow’s honeysuckle. I found a small bush of honeysuckle after about 15 minutes of walking. It was located in clear sunlight at the edge of the trail.

What were the key characteristics you were focusing on to tell the difference between the native vs. invasive?

I did check and it did have a hollow stem, however, I did not get a picture of it. That is why I could not include it as evidence.

Nice. Looks like you were very thorough.
