Why Nothing Matters

Nothing REALLY matters to Dr. Andy Pershing - super smart ecosystem modeler shared by GMRI & UMaine. Andy explains the importance of looking for whales in places you may not find them and reporting "not found" data. Understanding where whales are NOT is equally as important as understanding where they ARE.

I could see using a scientist video like this one to emphasize this part of science to my 8th graders. It's hard to get across to them that good science uses lots of observation and data collection to prove or disprove hypotheses. The development and use of models is overlooked and I think I could use it to help students understand that not finding a species is just as important in terms of data collection as finding it.
